Time as a Dimension of the Sample Design in National-Scale Forest Inventories
نویسندگان
چکیده
Historically, the goal of forest inventories has been to determine the extent of the timber resource. Predictions of how the resource was changing were made by comparing differences between successive inventories. The general view of the associated sample design was with selection probabilities based on land area observed at a discrete point in time. Time was not considered to be part of the sample design because it was not considered to be an element of the sampled population. Over the last few decades, the general goal of many national-scale forest inventories has been changing to monitoring the dynamic forest ecosystem. Here, we explore the inferential advantages of replacing the two-dimensional areal probability paradigm with a threedimensional spatiotemporal probability paradigm. Our general discussion is augmented with a simulated example for estimating annual growth by diameter classes. Two assumptions of temporal indifference and remeasurement interval length indifference, which arose because of the two-dimensional view, are investigated through a simulation. The simulation compares and contrasts five estimators that differ in their reliance on those assumptions to make annual estimates. The results of the simulations often show those assumptions to be bias inducing. FOR. SCI. ❚❚(❚):000–000.

Unbiased emission factor estimators for large scale forest 1 inventories : domain assessment techniques
Large scale forest inventories are often undertaken following a stratified ran7 dom or systematic design. Yet the strata rarely correspond to the reporting areas of 8 interest (domains) over which the country wants to report specific variables. The process 9 is exemplified by a country aiming to use national forest inventory data to obtain aver10 age biomass estimates per forest type for GHGI i...

This chapter deals with the integration of remote sensing data for national forest inventories. It will give a basic understanding of how remote sensing can be integrated in national forest inventories (NFA) and what aspects are important. It will give an overview of different remote sensing systems, data types, the advantages and disadvantages as well as future developments. Remote sensing dat...

BACKGROUNDS, MATERIAL AND METHODS To meet the demands of sustainable forest management and international commitments, European nations have designed a variety of forest-monitoring systems for specific needs. While the majority of countries are committed to independent, single-purpose inventorying, a minority of countries have merged their single-purpose forest inventory systems into integrated ...
متن کاملNational Forest Inventory of Finland — Past, Present and Future
Finland’s forest resources have been investigated by means of National Forest Inventories since 1921. The inventories have produced a detailed picture of forest resources and the state of forests as well as long time series. Although the structure of the growing stock and the forest balance have been the most important characteristics, the whole scope is much wider, including information on for...
متن کاملEstimating dead wood during national forest inventories: a review of inventory methodologies and suggestions for harmonization.
Efforts to assess forest ecosystem carbon stocks, biodiversity, and fire hazards have spurred the need for comprehensive assessments of forest ecosystem dead wood (DW) components around the world. Currently, information regarding the prevalence, status, and methods of DW inventories occurring in the world's forested landscapes is scattered. The goal of this study is to describe the status, DW c...
